Peacocks Class

Peacocks Planning Letter: Spring Term 3/4 2024 - Mrs Kent

Our topic this term is called ‘Let it snow, let it grow’. For the first half of the term the children will be learning about the Polar Regions, Arctic animals and the lifestyle of an Inuit and will be able to take part in many ice experiments including melting and freezing. After half term we will then move onto looking at things that grow and new life as we enter into Spring and celebrate Easter.

Mrs Kent and Mrs Duncan

Literacy

The children will be exploring books with an ice or snow theme. We will be looking closely at ‘Lost and Found’ by Oliver Jeffers. We will be acting out this story, write character profiles and describe the settings. We will then be looking at non-fiction books related to these animals and comparing similarities and differences between them. Our writing focus for the children this term is to gain confidence using their phonics to write simple words and sentences independently.

Reading

Your child should ideally be reading for a minimum of 10 minutes each evening. This includes reading a book independently, listening to you read a book or reading with / to you or another family member. Please remember that we aim to foster a love of reading and therefore it should be a fun and relaxing experience.

RE

This term our big question is ‘Where do I belong?’ and then after half term it will be ‘Why do Christians put a cross in an Easter garden?’ As well as this we will be celebrating Chinese New Year and reading stories from the Bible linked to our Christian value this term of Courage – The Good Samaritan and David and Goliath.

Knowledge and Understanding of the World

We will be looking at world maps, finding out where in the world we live and where the North and South pole is. We will also look at how climates are changing and what can be done about it.

School Trips

We have arranged a trip to Blackberry Farm for term 4 – more information to follow.

We would also like to arrange a trip to Copper Beech residential home in Uckfield. I think this would be a lovely experience for both the children and residents. Once we have confirmed this we will be in touch.

Homework Project

As a valuable contribution to our topic I would like to ask you and your child to create a model igloo at home. Please work with your child and be as creative as you want with resources and ideas! If the igloo can be presented in a shoe box lid size container or tray that would be brilliant to help with displaying it. It can be made out of any resources you wish to use, examples: lego, junk, cake! Please bring to school on the morning of Tuesday 6th February.  We are very excited to see what you and your child can create.

Phonics

We will continue to work through the Sounds Write programme. The children are enjoying their daily phonic learning and are working hard on their writing skills within this session.  We have just started Unit 5 in the Initial Code.

PE

Our P.E. lesson is on Monday morning with Wayne as well as daily Cosmic Yoga and the daily mile. On Thursday’s we will be having our second PE lesson of the week. Please make sure your child has their full P.E. kit and it is clearly named.

Numeracy

We will be building on our work from the Autumn term and following the White Rose curriculum for the EYFS

Please do not forget to go onto Mathletics and complete the activities set.

Forest School

Our sessions will continue on Wednesday mornings so please send your child into school on this day in their forest school clothes with their school uniform in a named bag. Please make sure they have waterproofs, gloves and hats especially now with this colder weather.

Please ensure your child has a named bottle of water in class.
