PE

The St Thomas a Becket Federation believes that the Physical Education curriculum will be experienced in a safe and supportive environment, which is essential to ensure children attain optimum physical and emotional development. We intend to deliver high-quality teaching and learning opportunities that inspire all children to succeed in physical education and in developing life skills. We want children to cooperate and take strength in collaboration with others as part of an effective team, to understand fairness and equity of play to embed life-long values. Our challenging curriculum aims to improve the wellbeing and fitness of all children regardless of their starting point taking pride in our Federation. They will become confident sports people through the sporting skills taught and through representing our school teams in festivals and competitive events.

Ambition

Through our Christian values, all children are taught: Perseverance, Fellowship, Courage, Respect, Understanding, Thankfulness when participating in the many sports and physical activities Framfield School has to offer.

At Framfield School, we recognise that Physical Education is a vital aspect of our everyday lives. It impacts all areas of learning across the curriculum and the general welfare of every child. As a school, we wish to promote physical health and wellbeing, preparing children for all aspects of future life. We are committed to providing children with the knowledge and skills they require to stay physically healthy and make the correct choices. We want to encourage children to challenge themselves both individually and as part of a team.

Through PE lessons, children develop important life skills, such working as part of a team, showing respect and supporting others. They will develop resilience skills to cope with new challenges and to set their own personal goals. They are encouraged to be proud of their own achievements and to celebrate and rejoice in the achievements of others.

Through high-quality teaching, children in all year groups have the opportunity to excel in PE. We want all children to develop a love of sport and an enthusiasm to continue this outside of school life both through community activities and in the future. We want them to be knowledgeable about the benefits of a healthy lifestyle for their physical and mental wellbeing.

Intent

A high-quality physical education curriculum inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically-demanding activities. It should provide opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. Opportunities to compete in sport and other activities build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect.

Implementation

Get set 4 PE is a scheme we are implementing throughout the school. Pupils will be taught to:

  • use running, jumping, throwing and catching in isolation and in combination.
  • play competitive games, modified where appropriate [for example, badminton, basketball, cricket, football, hockey, netball, rounders and tennis], and apply basic principles suitable for attacking and defending.
  • develop flexibility, strength, technique, control and balance [for example, through athletics and gymnastics].
  • perform dances using a range of movement patterns.
  • take part in outdoor and adventurous activity challenges both individually and within a team.
  • compare their performances with previous ones and demonstrate improvement to achieve their personal best.

At Framfield School:

  • PE at Framfield School provides challenging and enjoyable learning through a range of sporting activities including; invasion games, net & wall games, strike and field games, gymnastics, dance, swimming and outdoor & adventure.
  • The long-term plan sets out the PE units which are to be taught throughout the year and ensures that the requirements of the National Curriculum and EYFS Curriculum are fully met.
  • Pupils participate in two 1hour PE lessons a week. One with an outside provider (Active Primary Sports) working alongside the Teaching staff and the other lead by the teaching staff themselves.
  • In addition, children are encouraged to participate in the varied range of extracurricular activities.
  • Children are invited to attend competitive sporting events within the local area. This is an inclusive approach which endeavours to encourage not only physical development but also mental well-being. These events also develop teamwork and leadership skills and are very much enjoyed by the children.
  • Each year KS2 children are invited to become Sports Leaders for the school. They develop into sporting role models for the younger children, assisting with break-time clubs, our annual Sports day and any other Sporting activities.
  • Children participate in workshops covering a variety of sports throughout the year providing the children with an opportunity to develop, improve their fitness and to try something new.
  • Children in Year 4 swim once a week for a term.
  • The children take part in the Daily Mile, cosmic yoga or other brain breaks to help meet the government target of all children being active for at least 60 minutes a day.
